Not being a mere engineer, but a creative entrepreneur gives Jim McKelvey the strength of conversation wherever he goes. Close on the heels of an IPO, the serial entrepreneur CEO of mobile payments company, Square and LaunchCode is a man in no tearing hurry, and believes connecting science and arts with the business world is the new age, new route to go. In a session at the NASSCOM Leadership Forum 2016, he observes, “Art is what can't be proven mathematically, right, it's where science ends. It's the part that makes you feel good, but you don't know why”.
Believing in creative entrepreneurship and partnerships, McKelvey says, “I don't run any of my companies. I always partner with somebody who wants to operate”.
Elaborating on best practices in software development, he said that is a melting point of ideas from people straight out of school as well as veterans. Square has broken several biases in peoples management, as observed by Mckelvey, who says, there are no clear fine lines any more in hiring– in terms of age, yes, the bias exists and assumes No 1 position, but else race or gender do not attract bias anymore – these have become irrelevant.
